Value-added testing for adopted pets!

The Ontario SPCA Kent Branch is now offering additional services as part of its overall adoption program. At the time of their spay/neuter surgery, all cats will be tested for Feline Leukemia (FeLV) and Feline AIDS (FIV). These viruses can each cause serious illness in cats and making sure the cats are clear of these infections before adopting them out is another way of trying to ensure their overall good health. All dogs will be tested for heartworm (if old enough) at the time of their spay/neuter surgery. Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquito biting several dogs after already having fed on an infected dog. Within several months, the adult heartworms are living in the dog’s heart and causing damage to several vital organs as well as serving as a source of infection for other dogs. Both of these tests are now included as part of the total adoption package fee.

Pet Plan Insurance

Pet Plan, the largest pet insurance company in Canada is supporting the Ontario SPCA Kent Branch in several ways. They are offering a 6 week complimentary pet insurance package for all new adoptions with no obligation. The plan goes into effect 48 hours after the time of adopted pet leaving the Shelter. It can easily be activated by the new pet owner by calling their toll-free customer care center or by going online to their website at www.adoptionplan.ca The plan covers almost all injuries and illnesses. For every free plan activated, the Kent Shelter receives a small donation and for every plan converted over to a full insurance plan, the Shelter receives a generous donation from Pet Plan. More details are available at their website or there are info sheets available at the Animal Shelter.
