The Granny Walk is a multi-city Walk, Run or Bike taking place on August 8th in different locations in an effort to raise funds for Project Midabini. We are asking people to participate in the event by planning a walk in your city to coincide with our walk, by getting pledges from your circle of family and friends, or by making a pledge to someone participating in one of the walks. This event is called a Granny Walk because we are inviting participants to dedicate their efforts to either the honour or memory of their grandmother.
If you cannot possibly a plan your Granny Walk for that date, it should take place no later than August 7. All funds raised will be collected and placed with the North Buxton Missionary Society, and earmarked for Project Midabini.
Midabini is a school in the bush district near Karatu in the Rift Valley in Tanzania. The Missionary Society of the North Buxton Community Church have been supporting this school, by raising money to make improvements to the school buildings. So far they have been able to put windows and doors in two classrooms, as well as floors, and finishing the walls and interior of those same two classrooms. There are approximately 160 children in the school with 3 to 4 teachers. They have 6 classrooms. Three are now finished.
The New Hope Beaders make jewelry and sell it with proceeds of the sale of the necklaces and earrings donated towards making further improvements to the school. There is also a group of high school students in Kitchener who raise funds for the school. Last winter they were able to provide uniforms for many of the children with the money they raised. Both the New Hope Beaders and the group in Kitchener have indicated a desire to continue with raising funds for this project and we anticipate that they will participate in this granny walk as well.
Posters about the event will be provided as well as pledge sheets to all who are willing and able to organize an event in their area. After the money raised and pledge sheets are turned in tax receipts will be sent for all donations of $20 or more.
David and Joyce Middleton plan to work at the school in January 2011 for a month or perhaps more. Joyce will teach in the school while David helps with making additional improvements to the facility using money raised for this project.
