In the early fifties, Ralph Iles was the District Commissioner for Cottonera. He and his brother, Eddie, who had just returned from Alexandria were quite involved with the formation of a Scout Group in Senglea. They persuaded a brother in law, Joseph Saliba, who was well known in Senglea for his artistic talent to paint a picture of a Scout with the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Joseph came up with a beutiful painting and donated it to the Group. Invitations were sent out to various individuals and I, as the Pharmacist in the city, received mine.
The painting is taken after a famous painting known to Scouts all over the world, by Ernest S Carlos. It has been referred to as "The Scout" or "The Pathfinder"
Amongst the honoured guests was Canon Joseph Burlo, Archpriest of Senglea who blessed the painting while consecrating the Scout Group to the Sacred Heart. As a souvenir of the occasion, black and white post cards were distributed. After the ceremony I asked Saliba to autograph mine.
The painting hung in the Headquarters of the Senglea group for several years. Unfortunately Senglea Group ceased to exist and the painting went back to the family. Mrs Iles bequeathed it to the closest group and so it went to the Cospicua Scout Group and is now displayed with pride at their Head Quarters in Birgu [Vittoriosa]
